Maritime Vacation Part 2

William and Amy, Caribou-Monroes Island Provincial Park, NS

Caribou-Munroes Island Provincial Park, 11 kilometers north of Pictou and close to the PEI ferry terminal, was to be our home for the next five days. It had a mile-long sandy beach on the Northumberland Strait with the warmest salt water swimming north of the Carolinas and acres and acres of fields for William and Amy to run around or bike on. The weather remained beautiful the time we stayed there and we experienced some of the most fantastic star gazing ever. This was a hidden gem I had never heard of and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to visit this wonderful part of Nova Scotia. We had adjoining campsites, located close to the beach and probably the two best sites in the park. I had the beach to myself every morning early as I took Ben for a long walk along the sandy shore, Pictou Island across the water and the hazy shape of PEI off in the distance.

I would bike or walk William to the showers most evenings, enjoying his company more and more and looking forward to the day when he would start talking. We had a campfire every night, watching the darkness slowly descend and seeing who could spot the first star to appear, enjoying some of the local craft beers that have proliferated since we lived on the east coast. Marie and I found one close by, Uncle Leo's Brewery in Lyons Brook, recently named by Huffington Post as one of the best new breweries in Canada. We had the Red Ale and Smoked Porter, both excellent beers.

Phil had brought along the kids bicycles and picked up a small inflatable boat for them, this park and the shallow, warm water the perfect place to try it out. William felt quite comfortable in it and subsequently fell asleep as Phil pulled them around. I took Ben for a swim every day as well and he eventually got used to it. We had to change spots during our stay there due to other people's reservations but we were still just across from Phil and Fer. The afternoon of the 30th I volunteered to drive them to the small village where the wedding and reception was to be held, over an hour away, and pick them up at midnight. The wedding went well and I had the opportunity to meet Dart's father and step-father at the fire hall where the band and party was still going strong when I pulled up. Sunday would be a day of recovery for us all before packing up on Monday, August 1st and heading by ferry across the water to Prince Edward Island.   gws
