What would normally take four hours by car to Acapulco turned out to be an 8 hour drive. Because it was the closest beach to Mexico City and during the Christmas-New years holidays, it seemed half the population of the capital had decided to leave when we did that Saturday. Thankfully the highway was in good shape and we saw little indication a category three hurricane had recently passed through here. As the scenery changed the temperature steadily rose and it wasn't long before we left the cool air of Mexico City and descended into the valley. We took 95D pass Cuernavaca where we would be staying on our return from the coast, through Huitziltepec and Chilpancingo, crossing the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range and arriving in plus 30 degree temperatures as the Pacific came into view. It was getting dark when we arrived so we retired early, looking forward to exploring the next day....

On Monday we were invited to the home of one of Ana Isabel's friends, Jero, who lives in Las Brisas, Punta Diamante, the new Acapulco. Next door was one of the home's of Carlos Slim, the world's richest man and I suddenly felt I was treading in unfamiliar territory! The view from his home was outstanding, the whole Bahia de Acapulco stretching out before us, the lights of the city a necklace of bright colours framing the water. Drinks and a wonderful dinner with the one of the richest and friendliest men in Mexico...but it was too soon over! Tomorrow Marie and I are off to La Quebrada to see the famous cliff divers!
