At the local 7-11, Cuernavaca (jeez I just wanted a coffee!) |
We left Acapulco in the late morning and after about a 4 hour drive we arrived at the Penagos' winter home in Cuernavaca. We had stopped for lunch about an hour into our drive, pulling off the highway into a popular drive-up eating place that is rather difficult to describe. The concession stands are in a long low building with a dozen or so individual vendors all desperately vying for your business. They try to get you to pull up in front of their tables by vigorously waving plastic plates to get your attention! The food, tortillas and frijoles, was cooked right there, hot and tasty, and very cheap. Cuernavaca isn't as hot as Acapulco but much warmer than Mexico City - my kind of temperature. A small five-piece fair had set up business in the small lane in front of the house, as they do every year, and we naturally had to take Amy there that night. But first a stroll around the town I remembered from three years ago. As it was New Year's Eve we toasted one another at midnight with the traditional Spanish tradition the Penagos family follows each Ano Nuevo. We were all handed a wine glass with 12 grapes and got ready for the official countdown from the main square in Mexico City we were watching on TV. It is believed that whoever eats their 12 grapes as the bells chime (one for each of the twelve chimes) will have a lucky and prosperous year! Hopefully all our wishes and prayers come true!
