After bidding adieu to Jean-Pierre at the Gare in Portoson we boarded the first of two trains to Saint Malo arriving after less than two hours, our first stop in Brittany. We walked down to the old port to pick up some information at the tourist bureau before heading to our host Suzanne's house at 7 Rue de la Mare where we dropped off our things deciding to first visit the Musee Jacques Cartier on the edge of town. We took a bus as far as we thought we could go, to Saint-Coulomb, and walked the rest of the way, taking a shortcut through a barely used trail through the woods and onto a narrow country road surrounded by farms and fields. We finally spotted the flags of Quebec, Canada and France in the distance and knew we had found our museum. We had an interesting tour guide explain the history of the building and the three voyages of Cartier, the founder of Canada before catching another bus back into St Malo. Tomorrow we were going to explore this old city, rebuilt since the last war, and enjoy some more local French cuisine. gws
