Montreal, Formula 1 weekend

The 2016 Montreal Grand Prix took place on Sunday, 12 June, an unseasonably cold, overcast and windy day that promised rain. The day before we had taken William and Amy out to the F1 festival on Monkland for the evening and sweaters and jackets were the order of the day. The kids had a great time and it was pushing 9 by the time we left. The next day had started with a big breakfast at their favourite restaurant, having just heard that morning of the terrible news of the massacre in Orlando at the Pulse bar. With this still fresh in our minds and thoughts we took the bus and metro and joined the thousands heading out to the race. The pre-race excitement soon chased away any gloomy thoughts of the weather and the events in Florida. Marie had bought two general admission tickets at a great price a few months ago and as I had never attended an F1 race before I was pretty excited at the thought. Plus it would be a chance for Dad and son to do something together without the wives and kids for a change!

Big names like Lewis Hamilton racing for England and my favorite to win, Nico Rosberg from Germany, Sebastien Vettel (Germany), Kimi Raikkonen (Finland) and Felipe Massa (Brazil) were here at the 37th annual Canadian Grand Prix at the legendary Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit. Phil and I wandered around Parc Drapeau for a good two hours looking for the best vantage point to see the cars roar by. With general admission tickets you have to get there early but as we didn't show up till after noon we had to peer over the tops of the hundreds of other spectators crammed into the best spots on the grass and near the grandstands. It was fun none the less and a great chance for Father and Son to bond! And... Lewis Hamilton won!   gws

May 2016

Shortly after returning from Florida the last weekend of  May found us back in Montreal to see Amy perform at her annual dance recital, put on by the Tyler Anne School of Dance. Her group danced to "It Takes Two", a James Brown song that seemed a rather strange choice. Amy did her best though and looked as cute as a button in her pink dress. She and the rest of the family had just returned from a week in Cancun, Mexico. I was happy to see that my sister Carolyn and Mike had a chance to drop in from Cozumel on their way to Europe and meet the Penagos family for the first time, and also attend William's baptism.  The week before that we had driven to Ottawa to attend Christina's ultrasound at UC Baby. Her and  Alex still didn't know if it was a girl or a boy. I said boy and was right! Damien (the maybe baby name) is due in September and we are all anxious to see the latest addition to the family! Ben had a blast with Dexter and Scooby, Christina and Alex's two dogs. June arrived with rain and cold this year but I kept busy putting up the stone around the fireplace, a job that should last till July. Next week I am off to the Montreal F1 with Phil. Till then...happy spring!   gws
